Black Gaewan
“Ceramics like our ‘Giwa’ (roof tile) with a rich tradition”
With the hope that everyone can enjoy a good time, we always contemplate ways to produce functional teaware.
The only teaware with the hope that everyone can enjoy a good time,
we always contemplate ways to create functional and easy-to-use ceramics.
Although the first impression may not come across favorably, with time this teaware will become more familiar and friendly.
We hope that Delphic’s teaware made in collaboration with Minrok Choi can present you with a time to respect the tradition
and focus on the ceramic that suits the modern day.
This is Delphic’s teaware with a uniqueness of unglazed ceramics which is unusual.
To reinforce the carbonation of the roof tiles, smoke-producing materials are
put in the final stage of firing, and the entrance and the chimney of the kiln are
sealed to help smoke absorption generated by incomplete combustion.
In order to create the same essence of the teaware that resembles
the Korean traditional tiles, the artist uses saggar firing process in a box
that can withstand high temperatures called “Saggar” when firing ceramics,
and uses charcoal so that smoke can penetrate into the ceramic.
Since it is unglazed, the surface is not glossy, so you can experience
a feast of colors within the color of the ceramic.
The edge of the cup is of a moderate thickness that provides comfort
when drinking tea and the bottom of the cup has been designed
to have a uniform shape unlike the manually shaped top edge.
It is a rather crude looking cup with the hand-made form
but the smooth texture compliments its completeness.
*Saggar: ceramic boxlike container used to enclose and isolate ceramic during firing inside a kiln.
